Barbell Bicep Curl Wide Grip

The wide-grip barbell biceps curl is a standing arm exercise performed with the hands set wider than shoulder width on a barbell. It primarily trains the biceps while the forearms assist with gripping and controlling the bar. It supports upper-arm strength and muscle development when performed with controlled repetitions.

Instructions

  1. Set up: Stand tall with your feet about hip-width apart and hold a barbell with an underhand grip wider than shoulder width. Let the bar rest in front of your thighs.
  2. Brace: Keep your chest lifted, shoulders down, wrists neutral, and elbows close to your sides. Tighten your midsection and keep a slight bend in the knees.
  3. Curl: Exhale and bend your elbows to raise the bar in a smooth arc toward the front of your shoulders. Keep your upper arms mostly still and avoid leaning backward.
  4. Pause: Briefly squeeze your biceps at the top without forcing the bar into your chest or rolling the shoulders forward.
  5. Lower: Inhale and lower the bar slowly until your elbows are fully straight or comfortably close to straight. Maintain control rather than letting the bar drop.
  6. Repeat safely: Use a load that allows strict form for all repetitions. Stop if you feel sharp pain in the wrists, elbows, or shoulders.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the grip wide: Keep both hands consistently wider than shoulder width; moving them inward changes the exercise.
  2. Avoid momentum: Do not swing the hips or arch the lower back to lift the bar. Reduce the load if the torso moves.
  3. Control the wrists: Keep wrists straight in line with the forearms rather than allowing them to bend back.
  4. Use a steady tempo: Lift smoothly and make the lowering phase slow and controlled.
