Barbell Concentration Curl Close Grip

The close-grip barbell concentration curl is a seated biceps isolation exercise performed with the upper arms braced against the inner thighs. The narrow grip emphasizes controlled elbow flexion and helps limit momentum. It supports biceps strength, arm muscle development, and disciplined curling technique.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up a flat bench and place a light barbell where you can lift it safely. Sit near the front edge with your feet wide and firmly planted.
  2. Hold the barbell with an underhand close grip, keeping both hands near the center of the bar. Rest your upper arms against the inner thighs and let the bar hang under control.
  3. Keep your chest lifted, spine neutral, wrists straight, and elbows in contact with the thighs. Brace your abdomen before starting.
  4. Exhale and curl the bar upward by bending the elbows. Keep the upper arms still and avoid lifting the elbows away from the thighs.
  5. Raise the bar only as far as you can without the shoulders rolling forward or the wrists bending back. Briefly squeeze the biceps at the top.
  6. Inhale and lower the bar slowly to a controlled bottom position. Do not drop the weight or forcefully lock the elbows; repeat with steady control.

Technique tips

  1. Use a light load first. The close grip and thigh brace can make a barbell feel awkward; prioritize control over weight.
  2. Keep the wrists neutral and hands evenly spaced so the bar does not tilt or strain either wrist.
  3. Do not rock your torso or pull the elbows off the thighs to finish a repetition. Reduce the load if this happens.
  4. Use a smooth tempo: curl deliberately, pause briefly, and lower more slowly than you lift.
