Barbell Concentration Curl

The barbell concentration curl is a strict biceps isolation exercise performed seated with the elbows braced against the inner thighs. It emphasizes elbow flexion while limiting shoulder movement, helping develop biceps strength, control, and muscular endurance.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Sit on the edge of a bench with your feet planted wide and place a light barbell on the floor in front of you.
  2. Hinge forward with a neutral, long spine, grip the barbell at about shoulder width with an underhand grip, and brace both elbows against the inner thighs.
  3. Start with the arms nearly straight, wrists neutral, and shoulders relaxed; keep the bar close to the lower legs.
  4. Exhale and curl the bar upward by bending the elbows, keeping the upper arms pressed into the thighs and avoiding shoulder swing.
  5. Pause briefly when the biceps are fully contracted without forcing the wrists or elbows into an uncomfortable position.
  6. Inhale and lower the bar slowly until the arms are nearly straight, maintaining control throughout. Use a light load and stop if you cannot keep the elbows braced.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the load light. The barbell is harder to stabilize in this position than a dumbbell, so prioritize control over weight.
  2. Do not round your lower back or pull the bar with your torso; the elbows should remain firmly braced.
  3. Keep your wrists straight and use a smooth, controlled lowering phase rather than dropping the bar.
  4. Stop short of painful elbow or wrist positions and maintain an even grip on both sides of the bar.
