McGill Curl-Up

The McGill Curl-Up is a controlled core-stability exercise that trains the abdominal muscles while minimizing movement through the lower back. It emphasizes abdominal bracing and endurance rather than a large spinal curl. It can support trunk control, posture, and foundational core strength.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Lie on your back with one knee bent and the other leg straight; alternate the bent leg between sets.
  2. Place both hands, palms down, under the natural curve of your lower back to help maintain its neutral position.
  3. Brace your abdomen gently as if preparing for a light impact, keeping your neck long and chin slightly tucked.
  4. Lift your head, shoulders, and upper chest only a small distance from the floor without flattening or rounding your lower back.
  5. Hold the position briefly while breathing steadily, then lower with control and repeat.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the lift small. The goal is abdominal tension, not sitting up or curling far from the floor.
  2. Maintain lumbar neutrality. Do not press your lower back into your hands or let it arch excessively.
  3. Breathe during the hold. Avoid holding your breath; use a short, controlled hold that you can maintain with good form.
  4. Stop if pain increases. Use a smaller lift or end the set if the movement causes sharp or worsening discomfort.
