Cable Bicep Curl

The cable biceps curl is an isolation exercise in which you curl a cable handle toward your shoulders by bending the elbows. Constant cable tension primarily trains the biceps, with the forearms assisting grip and elbow control. It supports arm strength, muscle development, and controlled elbow-flexion training.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set the pulley low and attach a straight bar or cable handle. Select a light load that allows controlled repetitions.
  2. Stand tall facing the machine with your feet about hip-width apart. Hold the attachment with an underhand grip, arms extended, and wrists neutral.
  3. Brace your abdomen, keep your chest lifted, and pin your upper arms close to your sides. Do not lean back to start the curl.
  4. Exhale and curl the handle toward your shoulders by bending only at the elbows. Keep the elbows largely in place and squeeze the biceps briefly at the top.
  5. Inhale and lower slowly until the elbows are nearly straight, maintaining tension without forcefully locking the joints.
  6. Repeat with a smooth tempo. Stop or reduce the load if you cannot keep your torso still, wrists neutral, and movement pain-free.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the elbows fixed: Let the biceps move the load rather than allowing the elbows to drift forward or backward.
  2. Avoid swinging: Do not use hip drive or lean backward; reduce the load if the torso moves.
  3. Control both phases: Lift smoothly and use a slower return to keep cable tension and avoid dropping the stack.
  4. Keep wrists neutral: Avoid bending the wrists back or curling them to compensate for a load that is too heavy.
