Cable High Curl

The cable high curl is a biceps isolation exercise performed with cable handles set high. You curl the handles toward your head while keeping the upper arms lifted and relatively still. It builds biceps strength and muscle control, especially through a consistent cable resistance profile.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up the cables: Attach single handles to high pulleys and select a light, controlled load.
  2. Take position: Stand centered between the pulleys, hold a handle in each hand, and raise your upper arms out to the sides at about shoulder height.
  3. Brace: Use a staggered or stable stance, keep your chest tall, and maintain a neutral spine. Keep your elbows in line with or slightly in front of your shoulders.
  4. Curl: Exhale and bend your elbows to bring the handles toward the sides of your head. Keep the upper arms as still as possible.
  5. Return with control: Inhale and slowly extend your elbows until the biceps are lengthened without forcing the shoulder joints into an uncomfortable position.
  6. Repeat: Maintain the same posture and controlled tempo for all repetitions; stop if you feel sharp shoulder, elbow, or wrist pain.

Technique tips

  1. Use a manageable load: Excessive weight often makes the elbows drop or the torso sway.
  2. Keep the elbows high: Think of keeping your upper arms fixed while only the forearms move.
  3. Control both directions: Do not let the cable pull your arms open quickly; use a smooth, deliberate return.
  4. Keep wrists neutral: Avoid bending the wrists back or curling them to compensate for fatigue.
