Cable Drag Curl

The cable drag curl is a biceps isolation exercise performed by dragging the cable handle upward close to the torso while the elbows move behind the body. It emphasizes elbow flexion with a controlled cable resistance profile and also involves the forearms for gripping. It supports biceps strength and muscle development.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up a low cable pulley with a straight cable handle and choose a light, controllable load.
  2. Stand facing the pulley with feet about hip-width apart. Hold the handle with an underhand grip, arms long, chest tall, and wrists neutral.
  3. Brace your torso and keep the handle close to your body. Begin by drawing your elbows backward rather than swinging the shoulders forward.
  4. Flex your elbows and drag the handle upward along the front of your torso until your biceps are fully contracted, without leaning back.
  5. Lower slowly until the arms are straight again, keeping tension in the cable and control of your posture. Repeat for the planned repetitions.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the elbows traveling back rather than fixed at the sides; this is the defining feature of the drag curl.
  2. Use a load that allows a slow lowering phase. Avoid using momentum, torso lean, or a hip drive to move the handle.
  3. Keep wrists neutral and squeeze the handle firmly without bending the wrists back.
  4. Stop the upward motion if your shoulders roll forward or your lower back begins to arch excessively.
