Cable Decline Press

The cable decline chest press is a pressing exercise performed on a decline bench using cable handles. It primarily trains the lower portion of the chest, with the triceps and front shoulders assisting. The cables provide continuous resistance and can support chest strength and muscle-building goals.

Instructions

  1. Set the pulleys to a position that allows each handle to align comfortably with your lower chest when lying on a decline bench. Select a light load first.
  2. Position the bench centrally between the cables at a secure decline angle. Sit down, secure your feet or leg support, and carefully lie back while holding the handles.
  3. Set your starting position with the handles beside the lower chest, elbows bent and slightly below shoulder level. Keep your shoulder blades gently pulled back and down.
  4. Press the handles forward and slightly toward each other until your arms are nearly straight. Keep your wrists neutral and avoid forcefully locking the elbows.
  5. Return slowly until you feel a comfortable chest stretch while maintaining control of the cables and shoulder position. Repeat without bouncing or letting the weight stack slam.
  6. Finish safely by returning the handles under control, then sit up carefully before releasing them. Do not attempt loads you cannot control while getting on or off the bench.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the chest lifted and shoulder blades set; do not let the shoulders roll forward at the bottom.
  2. Use a controlled range that gives a chest stretch without shoulder discomfort. Reduce the range or load if control is lost.
  3. Exhale as you press and inhale as you return, keeping the torso stable against the bench.
  4. Use matching cable resistance on both sides and move both handles evenly to avoid twisting on the bench.
