Smith Machine Decline Bench Press

The Smith Machine Decline Bench Press is a barbell pressing movement performed on a decline bench under a fixed bar path. It primarily trains the lower portion of the chest, with the triceps and front shoulders assisting. It supports chest strength and muscle development while providing more stability than a free-barbell decline press.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set the safety stops just below the lowest point you can control, then position a decline bench centrally beneath the Smith bar.
  2. Lie back securely with your feet anchored, head and upper back supported, and grip the bar slightly wider than shoulder width.
  3. Unrack the bar by rotating it clear of the hooks. Keep your wrists stacked over your forearms and your shoulder blades gently pulled back and down.
  4. Lower the bar slowly toward the lower chest, keeping your elbows at a comfortable diagonal rather than flared straight out.
  5. Press the bar upward along its fixed path until your elbows are nearly straight, then re-rack it by rotating the bar into the hooks. Do not bounce the bar or let it touch your neck.

Technique tips

  1. Use a manageable load until you can control the bar and rack it smoothly on every repetition.
  2. Keep your chest lifted and shoulder blades set; avoid letting the shoulders roll forward at the bottom.
  3. Lower under control and exhale as you press. Stop the set if the bar path, foot anchor, or shoulder position becomes unstable.
