Cable Rope Lat Pulldown

The cable rope lat pulldown is a vertical pulling exercise performed on a cable pulldown machine using a rope attachment. It primarily trains the latissimus dorsi and upper back, with assistance from the biceps and forearms. It supports back strength, pulling control, and upper-body muscle development.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up the machine: Attach a rope handle to the high cable and secure your thighs under the pad. Choose a load that allows controlled movement.
  2. Take the starting position: Sit tall with feet flat, grasp one end of the rope in each hand, and begin with arms extended overhead. Keep your chest lifted and spine neutral.
  3. Pull the rope down: Draw your shoulder blades down, then pull the rope toward your upper chest by driving your elbows down and slightly back.
  4. Finish with control: Stop when your elbows are near your sides and the rope ends are beside the upper chest. Do not lean far back or shrug the shoulders.
  5. Return slowly: Let the rope travel upward under control until your arms are fully extended without losing a stable torso, then repeat.

Technique tips

  1. Lead with the elbows: Think of pulling your elbows toward your hips rather than pulling mainly with your hands.
  2. Keep the torso quiet: A small natural lean is acceptable, but avoid using a large backward swing to move the load.
  3. Control the return: Use a slow upward phase and keep the shoulders from rising toward the ears.
  4. Use an appropriate load: Reduce the weight if you cannot keep the chest lifted and complete the full controlled range.
