Cable Kneeling Pulldown

The cable kneeling pulldown is a vertical pulling exercise performed while kneeling in front of a high cable pulley. It primarily trains the latissimus dorsi and upper back, with the biceps assisting the pull. It supports back strength, shoulder control, and improved pulling mechanics.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set a cable pulley to a high position and attach a suitable pulldown handle. Select a light, controllable load.
  2. Kneel facing the pulley with your knees about hip-width apart. Hold the handle with both hands, arms extended overhead, and keep your torso tall.
  3. Brace your abdomen and set your shoulders down away from your ears before beginning the pull.
  4. Pull your elbows down and back, bringing the handle toward your upper chest while keeping your chest lifted and your torso mostly upright.
  5. Pause briefly when your elbows are close to your sides, squeezing your back without leaning far backward.
  6. Slowly allow the handle to return overhead under control until your arms are extended. Keep the shoulders controlled and repeat.

Technique tips

  1. Lead with the elbows: think of drawing them toward your ribs rather than pulling mainly with your hands.
  2. Keep your ribs stacked over your pelvis; excessive backward lean turns the movement into a different pulling angle.
  3. Use a load that permits a smooth return overhead without the weight stack slamming.
  4. Exhale as you pull down and inhale as you return the handle upward.
