Cable Rope Pull-Up

The cable rope pull-up is a vertical pulling exercise performed with a rope attachment on a high cable pulley. It primarily trains the lats and upper back while the biceps, rear shoulders, and core assist with the pull and stable body position. It supports back strength, pulling control, and muscle development without requiring a pull-up bar.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set a cable pulley to its highest position and attach a rope handle. Select a light load that you can control.
  2. Kneel facing the pulley, hold one end of the rope in each hand with arms extended overhead, and brace your abdomen.
  3. Keep your chest tall and shoulders down. Begin by drawing your shoulder blades down rather than shrugging them upward.
  4. Pull your elbows down and back toward your sides, bringing the rope ends toward the upper chest or shoulders.
  5. Pause briefly while squeezing your lats and upper back; keep the torso mostly still without leaning far backward.
  6. Slowly allow the rope to return overhead under control, keeping tension in the cable, then repeat.

Technique tips

  1. Lead with the elbows: Think about driving the elbows toward your ribs instead of pulling mainly with your hands.
  2. Avoid momentum: Do not swing, jerk the cable, or turn the movement into a backward lean.
  3. Use full control: Let the arms extend overhead only as far as you can keep the shoulders stable and the ribs from flaring.
  4. Breathe steadily: Exhale as you pull down and inhale during the controlled return.
