Assisted Pull-Up

The assisted pull-up uses a pull-up assistance machine to reduce the amount of body weight lifted. It primarily trains the latissimus dorsi and upper back, with substantial involvement from the biceps and shoulders. It helps build pulling strength and progress toward unassisted pull-ups.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set the assistance. Select an assistance load that lets you complete controlled repetitions; more assistance makes the movement easier.
  2. Set up securely. Step onto the platform or kneel on the pad while holding the handles, then place both hands on the bar slightly wider than shoulder width with an overhand grip.
  3. Begin from a controlled hang. Extend your arms without losing shoulder control, keep your chest lifted, and brace your abdomen.
  4. Pull upward. Drive your elbows down toward your sides and pull until your chin reaches bar height or slightly above it.
  5. Lower with control. Slowly extend the elbows to the starting position without dropping into the bottom, then repeat. Step off only after the platform or pad is stable.

Technique tips

  1. Choose enough assistance. Use a setting that keeps every repetition smooth and avoids swinging or kicking.
  2. Lead with the elbows. Think of drawing the elbows toward your ribs rather than pulling only with the hands.
  3. Control the lowering phase. A slow descent improves back engagement and prevents a hard pull on the shoulders.
  4. Progress gradually. Reduce the assistance only when you can maintain the same range of motion and control.
