Stability Ball Roman Twist

The Stability Ball Roman Twist is a controlled trunk-rotation exercise performed while the upper back is supported on a stability ball. It primarily trains the obliques and other abdominal muscles while challenging balance and core control. It can support rotational strength, trunk stability, and body awareness.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up the ball: Sit in front of a stability ball, then walk your feet forward until your upper back and shoulders are supported on the ball.
  2. Find a stable bridge: Place your feet about hip-width apart, bend the knees, and lift the hips until your body forms a straight line from shoulders to knees.
  3. Brace: Extend your arms together above your chest and keep the ribs down, neck relaxed, and feet firmly planted.
  4. Rotate with control: Keeping the hips as level as possible, slowly rotate the rib cage and arms to one side through a comfortable range.
  5. Return and switch: Use the abdominal muscles to return to center, then rotate to the other side. Continue with smooth, controlled repetitions without letting the ball roll.

Technique tips

  1. Prioritize stability: If the ball shifts excessively, reduce the rotation range and reset your bridge position.
  2. Move from the rib cage: Avoid swinging the arms independently or twisting aggressively through the lower back.
  3. Keep the hips high: Do not let the hips sag or rotate markedly as you turn.
  4. Breathe smoothly: Exhale during the rotation and inhale as you return to center.
