Cable Tricep Pushdown V-bar

The V-bar cable tricep pushdown is a cable isolation exercise performed with a V-shaped handle on a high pulley. It primarily trains the triceps through controlled elbow extension while the upper arms stay close to the torso. It supports arm strength, triceps muscle development, and pressing performance.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up a V-bar on a high cable pulley and select a light, controllable load.
  2. Face the machine, take the V-bar with a neutral grip, and stand tall with feet about hip-width apart. Brace your abdomen and keep a slight bend in your knees.
  3. Bring your elbows close to your sides with your forearms roughly parallel to the floor. Keep your chest lifted and shoulders down rather than shrugged forward.
  4. Press the bar down by extending your elbows until your arms are nearly straight. Keep the upper arms still and avoid using your body weight to move the stack.
  5. Pause briefly while squeezing the triceps, without forcefully locking or hyperextending the elbows.
  6. Return slowly by bending the elbows until the forearms return to the starting position. Maintain cable control and repeat for the planned repetitions.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the elbows fixed near your sides; swinging the elbows forward turns the movement into a shoulder-assisted press.
  2. Use a load that lets you control both directions. Do not let the weight stack pull your arms upward at the end of the repetition.
  3. Exhale as you press down and inhale as you return, while keeping your ribs and abdomen braced.
  4. If your wrists feel strained, keep them neutral in line with your forearms and reduce the load if needed.
