Dumbbell Incline Fly With A Twist

The dumbbell incline fly with a twist is a chest isolation exercise performed on an incline bench. It primarily targets the upper chest while the controlled wrist and forearm rotation adds a small rotational component at the top of the movement. It can support chest muscle development and control when performed with light to moderate loads.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set the bench to a moderate incline and sit with a dumbbell in each hand. Lean back with your feet firmly on the floor, shoulder blades gently pulled together, and chest lifted.
  2. Hold the dumbbells above your upper chest with palms facing each other and a soft, fixed bend in the elbows.
  3. Lower under control in a wide arc until you feel a comfortable chest stretch. Keep the elbows slightly bent and avoid letting the shoulders roll forward.
  4. Bring the dumbbells back together in the same arc by squeezing the chest. As they approach the top, rotate the palms toward a more forward-facing position without forcing the wrists.
  5. Reverse the rotation as you lower for the next repetition. Keep your head, upper back, and hips in contact with the bench, and use a load that allows smooth control.

Technique tips

  1. Use a lighter load than for presses. The long lever of a fly can make heavy dumbbells difficult to control.
  2. Keep the elbow bend nearly unchanged; turning the movement into a press shifts emphasis away from the fly.
  3. Move only through a pain-free range. Do not chase extra depth if the front of the shoulder feels strained.
