Dumbbell One-Arm Lateral Raise Stability Ball

The dumbbell one-arm lateral raise on a stability ball is a seated shoulder isolation exercise that combines lateral arm lifting with balance control. It primarily targets the lateral deltoid while the trunk works to maintain a steady position on the ball. It can support shoulder muscle development, control, and coordination.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up securely: Choose a properly inflated stability ball and sit near its center with both feet flat, about hip-width apart.
  2. Hold one dumbbell at your side with a neutral grip and keep the other arm relaxed or lightly extended for balance. Sit tall with your ribs stacked over your pelvis.
  3. Brace your trunk and keep a soft bend in the working elbow. Without leaning or bouncing, raise the dumbbell out to the side in a smooth arc.
  4. Lift until the arm is approximately level with the shoulder, keeping the shoulder down and the wrist neutral.
  5. Lower slowly to your side with control, maintaining your seated balance throughout the repetition.
  6. Complete the desired repetitions, then switch arms. Use a lighter dumbbell or a stable bench if you cannot remain steady on the ball.

Technique tips

  1. Choose a light load: the unstable seat makes this variation more demanding than a seated raise on a bench.
  2. Keep your torso still; leaning toward or away from the dumbbell shifts work away from the target shoulder.
  3. Do not swing the weight. Use a controlled lift and a slower lowering phase.
  4. Stop the raise around shoulder height and avoid shrugging the working shoulder toward your ear.
