Dumbbell Shoulder Press Stability Ball

The dumbbell shoulder press on a stability ball is an overhead pressing exercise performed while seated on an exercise ball. It primarily trains the deltoids and triceps while requiring the abs and glutes to stabilize the torso and ball. It supports shoulder strength, pressing control, balance, and core stability.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up safely: Choose a properly inflated stability ball and sit near its center with both feet flat and about hip-width apart. Hold a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height with palms facing forward or slightly inward.
  2. Find a stable posture: Brace your abs, squeeze the glutes lightly, keep the chest tall, and maintain a neutral spine. Keep the feet firmly planted rather than letting the ball roll.
  3. Press upward: Exhale and press both dumbbells overhead in a smooth, controlled path until the arms are nearly straight. Keep the wrists stacked over the elbows and avoid shrugging the shoulders.
  4. Lower with control: Inhale as you lower the dumbbells back to shoulder level, keeping the elbows slightly in front of or in line with the torso. Do not drop the weights or bounce on the ball.
  5. Finish safely: Complete all repetitions with steady balance, then return the dumbbells to shoulder height and place them down carefully before standing. Use lighter weights if you cannot control the ball and the dumbbells together.

Technique tips

  1. Prioritize stability over load: Start lighter than you would for a seated bench shoulder press, because the ball adds a balance demand.
  2. Keep the ribs down: Brace the abs and avoid excessive lower-back arching as the dumbbells move overhead.
  3. Use a controlled range: Lower only as far as you can keep the wrists, elbows, torso, and ball stable. Stop if balance is lost or the movement becomes painful.
