Dumbbell Arnold Press

The Dumbbell Arnold Press is a shoulder press that starts with the dumbbells in front of the shoulders and rotates them outward as they are pressed overhead. It primarily trains the deltoids while also working the triceps and requiring controlled shoulder mobility. It supports upper-body pressing strength and shoulder muscle development.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Stand tall with your feet about hip-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height with palms facing you.
  2. Brace your abdomen, keep your ribs down, and begin with your elbows slightly in front of your torso.
  3. Press the dumbbells upward in a smooth arc while rotating your palms outward, finishing with palms facing forward near the top.
  4. Stop with the dumbbells overhead without forcefully locking or shrugging your shoulders; keep your head and spine neutral.
  5. Lower the dumbbells slowly while reversing the rotation until your palms face you again at shoulder height, then repeat.

Technique tips

  1. Use a manageable load. The rotation should feel smooth and controlled rather than forced.
  2. Avoid leaning back. Keep the abdomen braced and reduce the weight if your lower back arches.
  3. Keep the path comfortable. Do not lower farther than your shoulder mobility allows without pain or pinching.
  4. Breathe steadily. Exhale during the press and inhale as you lower the dumbbells under control.
