Dumbbell One-Arm Arnold Press Stability Ball

The Dumbbell One-Arm Arnold Press on a stability ball is a seated overhead pressing exercise that combines shoulder pressing and rotation while challenging seated balance. It primarily trains the deltoids, with assistance from the triceps and core, supporting shoulder strength, coordination, and trunk stability.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up securely: Sit tall near the center of a properly inflated stability ball with both feet flat and about hip-width apart. Hold one dumbbell at shoulder height with the palm facing you; keep the other arm relaxed at your side.
  2. Brace your body: Engage your abdomen, keep your chest lifted, and maintain a neutral spine without leaning or bouncing on the ball.
  3. Press and rotate: Exhale as you press the dumbbell overhead. Gradually rotate the palm to face forward as the arm rises, keeping the elbow slightly in front of or in line with the shoulder.
  4. Finish with control: Stop with the arm nearly straight overhead without forcefully locking the elbow or shrugging the shoulder.
  5. Return slowly: Inhale as you lower the dumbbell to shoulder height, rotating the palm back toward your face. Complete all repetitions on one side, then repeat evenly on the other.

Technique tips

  1. Prioritize stability: Use a light load until you can remain still on the ball throughout the repetition.
  2. Keep the ribs down: Avoid arching the lower back to finish the press; reduce the load or range if this occurs.
  3. Move smoothly: Make the rotation gradual and controlled rather than twisting the wrist or shoulder abruptly.
