Dumbbell One-Arm Arnold Press

The Dumbbell One-Arm Arnold Press is a unilateral overhead pressing exercise that combines a shoulder rotation with a press. It primarily trains the deltoids while also working the triceps and demanding trunk control to resist leaning or twisting. It supports shoulder strength, pressing coordination, and balanced side-to-side development.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Stand tall with feet about hip-width apart and hold one dumbbell at shoulder height, palm facing toward your face and elbow slightly in front of your body.
  2. Brace your core, keep your ribs stacked over your pelvis, and keep the wrist neutral.
  3. Rotate and press the dumbbell upward in one smooth motion, turning the palm forward as the elbow moves out to the side.
  4. Finish overhead with the arm straight but not forcefully locked, the biceps near the ear, and your torso upright.
  5. Lower under control, reversing the rotation until the dumbbell returns to shoulder height with the palm facing you. Complete the planned repetitions, then switch sides.

Technique tips

  1. Use a manageable load. The rotation should be smooth and pain-free; do not force range of motion.
  2. Avoid leaning back. Squeeze the glutes and brace the abdomen instead of arching the lower back to finish the press.
  3. Control the descent. Lowering slowly helps keep the shoulder and wrist aligned.
  4. Keep both sides even. Use the same load and repetitions on each arm, beginning with the less strong side if needed.
