Dumbbell Alternating Press Palms In

The dumbbell alternating neutral-grip shoulder press is an overhead pressing exercise in which one dumbbell is pressed at a time with the palms facing each other. It primarily trains the deltoids and triceps while requiring trunk control, supporting shoulder strength, overhead stability, and balanced unilateral coordination.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up: Stand tall with a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height, elbows bent and palms facing each other.
  2. Brace: Set your feet about hip-width apart, tighten your abdomen, and keep your ribs stacked over your pelvis.
  3. Press one side: Exhale and press one dumbbell overhead until the elbow is straight but not forcefully locked.
  4. Lower with control: Inhale and return that dumbbell to shoulder height without leaning back or flaring the ribs.
  5. Alternate: Press the other dumbbell in the same manner, alternating sides for the planned repetitions while keeping the non-working dumbbell stable.

Technique tips

  1. Keep a neutral spine: Do not turn the press into a backbend; reduce the load if you cannot keep your ribs down.
  2. Use a controlled path: Press smoothly upward and lower slowly rather than using leg drive or momentum.
  3. Keep the wrist stacked: Maintain a straight wrist with the dumbbell balanced over the forearm.
  4. Choose an appropriate load: Stop the set if shoulder position, trunk control, or pressing path becomes uneven.
