Dumbbell One-Arm Hammer Shoulder Press

The Dumbbell One-Arm Hammer Shoulder Press is a unilateral overhead pressing exercise performed with a dumbbell held in a neutral, palms-in grip. It primarily trains the deltoids while the triceps and core help press and stabilize the load. It supports shoulder strength, balanced side-to-side development, and overhead control.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up: Stand upright with your feet about hip-width apart and hold one dumbbell at shoulder height. Use a neutral grip, with your palm facing inward and your elbow slightly in front of your torso.
  2. Brace: Tighten your abdominal muscles, keep your ribs stacked over your pelvis, and keep your wrist straight over your forearm.
  3. Press: Exhale as you press the dumbbell upward in a controlled path until your arm is nearly straight overhead. Keep the shoulder down away from your ear and do not lean sideways.
  4. Lower: Inhale and slowly return the dumbbell to shoulder height, keeping the elbow under or slightly in front of the weight.
  5. Repeat evenly: Complete the planned repetitions, then perform the same number on the other arm. Use a load that allows steady control without back arching or shoulder discomfort.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the neutral grip: Keep your palm facing inward throughout the repetition rather than rotating into a different pressing grip.
  2. Avoid compensating: Do not use a leg drive, excessive lower-back arch, or side bend to move the dumbbell.
  3. Control the range: Press only through a comfortable overhead range and lower the weight slowly; reduce the load if control is lost.
