Dumbbell Arnold Press Stability Ball

The seated dumbbell Arnold press on a stability ball combines a rotating dumbbell press with the balance demand of sitting on a ball. It primarily trains the deltoids, with assistance from the triceps and core for pressing and posture control. It supports shoulder strength, coordination, and seated stability.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up safely: Place the stability ball on a clear, non-slip surface and sit near its center with both feet flat and about hip-width apart.
  2. Start position: Hold a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height, palms facing you and elbows slightly in front of your torso. Brace your core and keep your chest tall.
  3. Press and rotate: Exhale as you rotate your palms forward and press the dumbbells overhead in one smooth motion. Keep your wrists stacked over your elbows.
  4. Finish with control: Stop when your arms are nearly straight overhead without shrugging or leaning back. Keep the ball still and your feet firmly planted.
  5. Return: Inhale as you lower the dumbbells slowly, rotating the palms back toward you until they reach the starting position. Complete all repetitions with controlled balance.

Technique tips

  1. Use a manageable load: Choose dumbbells light enough to keep the ball and torso steady throughout the set.
  2. Do not chase range: Press only as high as you can without leaning back, flaring the ribs, or losing control of the ball.
  3. Keep the rotation smooth: Rotate at the shoulders while keeping the wrists neutral; do not force the motion if it causes discomfort.
  4. Control your breathing: Exhale during the press and inhale during the slow lowering phase.
