Dumbbell Alternating Arnold Press

The Dumbbell Alternating Arnold Press is a unilateral overhead pressing exercise in which each dumbbell rotates from a palms-facing position to an overhead press. It primarily trains the deltoids while also working the triceps and requiring controlled shoulder stability. It supports shoulder strength, muscular development, and coordination between sides.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Stand tall with feet about hip-width apart, holding two dumbbells at shoulder height with palms facing you and elbows slightly in front of the body.
  2. Brace your core, keep your ribs stacked over your pelvis, and keep your wrists neutral.
  3. Press one dumbbell upward while rotating the palm gradually to face forward; finish with the arm nearly straight overhead without shrugging the shoulder.
  4. Lower with control, rotating the dumbbell back until the palm faces you at shoulder height.
  5. Repeat on the other side, alternating arms while keeping your torso still and the non-working dumbbell in the start position.

Technique tips

  1. Use a manageable load: the dumbbell should move smoothly without leaning back or using leg drive.
  2. Control the rotation: rotate through a comfortable shoulder range rather than forcing the elbows far behind the body.
  3. Keep the torso quiet: avoid rib flare and excessive lower-back arch as each arm presses.
  4. Breathe steadily: exhale during the press and inhale as you lower the dumbbell.
