Hack Single-Leg Calf Raise

The hack machine single-leg calf raise is an isolation exercise performed on a hack squat machine by rising onto the ball of one foot. It primarily targets the calves while the machine provides support and stability, helping build lower-leg strength, calf size, and side-to-side control.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set the machine: Adjust the hack machine so your shoulders sit securely under the pads and your back is supported against the pad. Use a light load first.
  2. Place one foot: Position the ball of one foot on the lower edge of the foot platform, with the heel free to move. Keep the other leg bent and clear of the platform.
  3. Start tall: Release the safety handles, keep the working knee nearly straight but not locked, and brace your torso against the pads.
  4. Lower under control: Let the heel descend slowly until you feel a comfortable calf stretch without losing foot contact or shifting your hips.
  5. Raise the heel: Press through the ball of the working foot to lift your heel as high as possible. Pause briefly while keeping the movement smooth.
  6. Finish safely: Lower with control for each repetition, complete the planned repetitions on both sides, then re-engage the safety handles before leaving the machine.

Technique tips

  1. Use a full comfortable range: Allow the heel to lower under control, then rise fully without bouncing at the bottom.
  2. Keep pressure centered: Press through the ball of the foot rather than rolling excessively to the inner or outer edge.
  3. Do not lock the knee: Keep a soft knee and avoid using a knee bend to help drive the weight.
  4. Control the load: Choose a resistance that allows steady repetitions and equal quality on both legs.
