Hack Calf Raise

The hack machine calf raise is a machine-based calf exercise performed on a hack squat machine by extending the ankles against resistance. It primarily targets the calves, especially the gastrocnemius and soleus, and supports lower-leg strength and muscle development.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set the machine with a manageable load and position yourself in the hack squat machine with your back and shoulders supported by the pads.
  2. Place the balls of both feet on the lower edge of the foot platform, about hip-width apart, with your heels free to move.
  3. Release the safety handles, keep your knees softly bent without changing their angle, and lower your heels under control until you feel a comfortable calf stretch.
  4. Press through the balls of your feet to raise your heels as high as possible, squeezing your calves without locking or bouncing through the knees.
  5. Pause briefly at the top, then lower slowly to the stretched position and repeat. Re-engage the safety handles before leaving the machine.

Technique tips

  1. Use a full controlled range: let the heels lower comfortably, then rise without bouncing.
  2. Keep pressure centered through the balls of the feet; do not let the feet slide on the platform.
  3. Choose a load that allows a slow lowering phase and stable body position throughout the set.
