Cable Calf Raise

The cable calf raise is a standing calf exercise performed against resistance from a low cable pulley, typically attached to a belt around the hips. It primarily trains the calves, especially the gastrocnemius and soleus, while improving ankle strength and control for lower-body training and daily movement.

Instructions

  1. Set a low cable pulley and attach the cable securely to a belt around your hips. Stand facing away from the machine, far enough forward that the cable is taut.
  2. Place your feet about hip-width apart and hold a stable support lightly for balance. Keep your knees straight but not locked, chest tall, and abdomen braced.
  3. Rise onto the balls of your feet by pressing through your big toes and lifting your heels as high as you can without leaning forward or back.
  4. Pause briefly at the top, then lower your heels slowly until your feet are flat on the floor. Keep the cable controlled and repeat for the planned repetitions.

Technique tips

  1. Use a manageable load: choose resistance that lets you reach a high, controlled heel lift without swinging or leaning.
  2. Move through the ankles: avoid bending the knees or turning the movement into a hip lean.
  3. Control the lowering phase and avoid bouncing off the floor; reduce the load if you cannot keep the cable and pelvis steady.
