Smith Machine Single-Leg Calf Raise

The Smith Machine Single-Leg Calf Raise is a unilateral standing calf exercise performed under a guided bar. It primarily targets the calves while allowing controlled external loading and helps develop lower-leg strength, calf size, and single-leg balance.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set the Smith bar around shoulder height and choose a light, controllable load.
  2. Stand beneath the bar with its padding across your upper back, then unrack it. Place one foot firmly on the floor and bend the nonworking knee, keeping that foot off the floor.
  3. Hold the upright lightly for balance, brace your torso, and keep the working knee softly bent without letting it collapse inward.
  4. Lower the working heel under control until you feel a comfortable calf stretch.
  5. Press through the ball of the working foot to raise the heel as high as possible, briefly squeezing the calf. Lower slowly and complete the repetitions before changing sides.

Technique tips

  1. Use a full range: let the heel descend comfortably, then reach a deliberate high position rather than bouncing.
  2. Control the load: begin lighter than you expect; unilateral loading can challenge balance and the calf quickly.
  3. Keep pressure centered: press through the ball of the foot without rolling excessively to the inside or outside edge.
