Machine Calf Raise

The machine calf raise is an isolation exercise performed on a calf-raise machine by lifting the heels against resistance. It primarily trains the calves, especially the gastrocnemius and soleus, while supporting ankle strength and lower-leg muscular development. It can be used for calf hypertrophy, strength, and controlled ankle conditioning.

Instructions

  1. Set up the machine by selecting a manageable load and adjusting the shoulder pads or seat so your feet can rest securely on the platform.
  2. Place the balls of your feet on the platform about hip-width apart, with your heels free to move. Keep your knees in the position required by the machine and your torso supported.
  3. Begin with your heels lowered under control until you feel a comfortable stretch through the calves; do not force the range of motion.
  4. Press through the balls of your feet to raise your heels as high as comfortably possible, keeping the movement smooth and controlled.
  5. Pause briefly at the top while keeping your feet aligned and avoiding rolling onto the outer edges of the feet.
  6. Lower slowly back to the stretched position and repeat without bouncing. Stop if you feel sharp pain in the foot, ankle, or calf.

Technique tips

  1. Use a full controlled range: lower into a comfortable stretch and rise by actively squeezing the calves rather than bouncing.
  2. Keep pressure centered through the balls of the feet; do not let the ankles roll inward or outward.
  3. Choose a load you can control for the entire repetition, including a slow lowering phase.
  4. Exhale as you raise the heels and inhale as you lower them. Reduce the load or range if control is lost.
