Calf Press On Leg Press

The leg press calf press is a seated machine exercise performed by pressing through the balls of the feet while the legs remain nearly straight. It primarily trains the calves, especially the gastrocnemius and soleus, and supports lower-leg strength and ankle control. It is commonly used to build calf muscle and strength with stable, guided resistance.

Instructions

  1. Set up the machine: Sit securely in the leg press and adjust the seat so your lower back and hips stay supported against the pads.
  2. Place your feet: Put the balls of both feet on the lower edge of the platform, about hip-width apart. Keep your heels free to move and your toes pointing forward.
  3. Start safely: Release the safety handles only when you are controlled. Keep your knees soft rather than forcefully locked, with the sled supported through your feet.
  4. Lower under control: Let your heels move down slowly until you feel a comfortable calf stretch, without letting your feet slip or your knees bend noticeably.
  5. Press and repeat: Push through the balls of your feet to raise your heels as high as comfortably possible. Pause briefly, then lower slowly for the next repetition before securing the safety handles when finished.

Technique tips

  1. Use a manageable load: Choose a weight that lets you move slowly without bouncing or losing contact with the platform.
  2. Keep the movement at the ankle: Avoid turning it into a leg press by bending and straightening your knees during repetitions.
  3. Use a controlled range: Lower only as far as your ankle mobility allows while your feet remain secure on the platform.
  4. Control your breathing: Exhale as you press up and inhale as you lower; do not hold your breath through the set.
