Cable Single-Leg Calf Raise

The cable single-leg calf raise is a standing ankle-extension exercise performed one leg at a time against cable resistance. It primarily targets the calf muscles, while the foot, ankle, and hip stabilizers help maintain balance. It supports calf strength, lower-leg control, and unilateral strength development.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up the cable: Attach a low cable to a secure belt or attachment positioned at the hips, then select a light load that allows controlled ankle movement.
  2. Take your stance: Stand facing the cable machine with the working foot flat on the floor and the other foot lifted clear of the ground. Keep the cable taut and use the machine frame lightly for balance if needed.
  3. Align your body: Stand tall with a neutral spine, level hips, and a soft bend in the working knee. Keep your working foot pointed straight ahead.
  4. Raise the heel: Press through the ball of the working foot and slowly lift the heel as high as comfortably possible. Keep the ankle aligned and avoid rolling toward the inner or outer edge of the foot.
  5. Lower with control: Pause briefly at the top, then lower the heel slowly to the floor under control. Complete all repetitions on one side before changing legs.

Technique tips

  1. Use a manageable load: Cable resistance should not pull your hips out of position or make balance the limiting factor.
  2. Move through the ankle: Keep the knee position steady and avoid bouncing or using a quick bend-and-straighten motion to create momentum.
  3. Control both directions: Lift smoothly, pause briefly at the top, and make the lowering phase slow and deliberate.
