Machine Single-Leg Calf Press

The machine single-leg calf press is an isolation exercise performed by pressing through the ball of one foot against a machine platform. It primarily trains the calves, especially the gastrocnemius and soleus, while developing unilateral lower-leg strength and ankle control. It can support calf muscle development and address side-to-side strength differences.

Instructions

  1. Set up the machine with a light load and adjust the seat or platform so you can sit securely with your back supported.
  2. Place the ball of one foot on the lower edge of the platform. Keep the heel free to move, the knee softly bent or in the machine's intended position, and keep the other leg clear of the moving parts.
  3. Release the safety handles according to the machine's instructions, then lower the heel slowly until you feel a comfortable stretch in the calf.
  4. Press through the ball of the working foot to raise the heel as high as comfortably possible. Keep the foot facing forward and avoid bending or straightening the knee to create momentum.
  5. Pause briefly at the top, then lower under control to the stretched position. Complete all repetitions on one side before changing legs, and re-engage the safety handles before leaving the machine.

Technique tips

  1. Use a controlled tempo: lower slowly and avoid bouncing out of the bottom position.
  2. Keep pressure centered through the ball of the foot; do not let the ankle roll inward or outward.
  3. Use a full comfortable range of motion, but do not force an excessive ankle stretch.
  4. Choose a load that allows equal, clean repetitions on both legs without shifting your hips or using momentum.
