Machine Hip Abduction

Machine hip abduction is a seated isolation exercise in which you press the thigh pads outward against resistance. It primarily targets the outer glutes and hip abductors, helping build hip strength, stability, and lower-body control.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set the machine so the thigh pads rest comfortably against the outside of your thighs and select a manageable load.
  2. Sit tall with your back against the pad, feet supported as designed by the machine, and hold the handles lightly.
  3. Brace your trunk and press your thighs outward in a smooth, controlled motion without lifting your hips or leaning back.
  4. Pause briefly at a comfortable open position, keeping the movement controlled and free of jerking.
  5. Return slowly until the pads come back under control; do not let the weight stack slam. Repeat for the planned repetitions.

Technique tips

  1. Use a controlled range that feels comfortable at the hips; do not force the pads farther apart.
  2. Keep your pelvis still and avoid rocking, leaning, or using momentum to move the load.
  3. Choose a load you can control through both the outward press and the slow return.
