Machine Lateral Shoulder Raise

The machine lateral raise is an isolation exercise performed on a lateral raise machine, lifting the upper arms out to the sides against resistance. It primarily targets the lateral deltoids, with the upper trapezius assisting to stabilize and control the shoulder girdle. It supports shoulder muscle development and controlled shoulder-strength training.

Instructions

  1. Set the machine so the pivot point aligns approximately with your shoulder joints, then choose a light load for controlled repetitions.
  2. Sit tall with your back supported, feet firmly on the floor, and upper arms or elbows positioned securely against the pads.
  3. Start low with your shoulders relaxed, chest steady, and a slight bend in the elbows. Keep your wrists neutral.
  4. Raise your upper arms out to the sides in a smooth arc until they are about shoulder height or within a comfortable, controlled range. Exhale as you lift.
  5. Pause briefly without shrugging your shoulders or leaning your torso.
  6. Lower slowly to the starting position while inhaling, maintaining tension and avoiding a hard impact on the weight stack.

Technique tips

  1. Use a manageable load. If you need to swing, lean, or shrug to lift the pads, reduce the resistance.
  2. Keep the shoulders down. Think about moving the upper arms outward rather than lifting the shoulders toward the ears.
  3. Control both directions. Lift and lower smoothly; do not let the weight stack pull you down.
  4. Respect your range of motion. Stop short of any painful shoulder position and keep the movement comfortable.
