Machine Deltoid Raise

The machine deltoid raise is a seated shoulder isolation exercise in which you lift the machine arms out to the sides. It primarily targets the lateral deltoids, helping develop shoulder width, control, and upper-body strength.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Adjust the machine so the seat places the pivot point and pads roughly in line with your shoulders. Select a light weight to learn the movement.
  2. Sit tall with your back supported, feet flat on the floor, and forearms or upper arms positioned against the pads as the machine design requires.
  3. Brace your abdomen, keep your chest relaxed and open, and begin with your shoulders down rather than shrugged toward your ears.
  4. Raise the arms outward in a smooth arc until your upper arms are about shoulder height, keeping the movement controlled and your torso still.
  5. Lower slowly to the starting position without letting the weight stack slam. Stop if the movement causes sharp shoulder pain.

Technique tips

  1. Use a manageable load. If you must shrug, swing, or shorten the range substantially, reduce the weight.
  2. Keep the lowering phase controlled; do not let the stack pull your arms down.
  3. Prioritize shoulder comfort. Use a pain-free range and keep your neck relaxed throughout.
