Machine Leg Extension

The machine leg extension is a seated knee-extension exercise performed on a leg extension machine. It primarily targets the quadriceps on the front of the thighs and helps build knee-extension strength and thigh muscle endurance. It is commonly used for focused lower-body strength and muscle-building training.

Instructions

  1. Adjust the machine: Set the backrest so your knees align with the machine’s pivot point. Position the ankle pad just above your ankles and choose a manageable load.
  2. Set your position: Sit tall with your back against the pad, hips supported, and feet pointing forward under the ankle pad. Hold the handles or seat for stability.
  3. Extend your knees: Exhale and straighten your knees in a smooth, controlled motion until your legs are nearly straight. Keep your hips and lower back in contact with the seat.
  4. Pause briefly: Squeeze your quadriceps at the top without forcefully locking or snapping the knees into extension.
  5. Lower with control: Inhale as you slowly return the pad to the starting position, bending the knees under control. Use a comfortable range of motion and repeat.

Technique tips

  1. Match the pivot: Keeping the knee joint aligned with the machine’s pivot helps the movement feel smoother and more controlled.
  2. Use a steady tempo: Avoid swinging the weight; especially control the lowering phase.
  3. Keep your hips down: Do not lift or slide your hips forward to finish a repetition.
  4. Choose a comfortable range: Stop or reduce the range if you feel sharp discomfort in the knees.
