Machine Pec Fly

The machine pec fly is a seated chest isolation exercise performed by bringing the machine arms together in an arc. It primarily trains the pectoral muscles, with the front shoulders assisting. It supports chest hypertrophy, muscular control, and pressing strength development.

Instructions

  1. Set the machine: Adjust the seat so the handles or pads align roughly with mid-chest level, and select a manageable load.
  2. Get positioned: Sit tall with your back against the pad, feet firmly on the floor, chest lifted, and shoulders gently drawn down and back.
  3. Bring the arms together: Keep a soft bend in the elbows and press the handles or pads together in a smooth arc. Exhale as your chest contracts.
  4. Return with control: Inhale and slowly allow the arms to open until you feel a comfortable chest stretch without forcing the shoulders backward. Repeat without bouncing or lifting your torso from the pad.

Technique tips

  1. Prioritize alignment: Set the seat before loading the machine; handles that are too high or low can make the shoulders uncomfortable.
  2. Keep the elbows soft: Maintain the same slight elbow bend throughout rather than turning the movement into a press.
  3. Use a controlled range: Do not force a deep stretch or let the weight stack pull your arms open quickly.
  4. Choose appropriate resistance: Use a load that lets you keep your back against the pad and move smoothly through every repetition.
