Stability Ball Neck Flexion

Stability Ball Neck Flexion is a controlled neck-strengthening exercise performed with the head supported against a stability ball. It primarily trains the neck flexors while requiring careful control and stable body positioning. It can support neck strength and postural control when performed with a small, comfortable range of motion.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up securely: Place a stability ball against a solid wall on a non-slip surface. Stand with your back to the wall and position the ball behind the back of your head.
  2. Find a stable stance: Step your feet slightly forward, keep them about hip-width apart, and maintain a tall torso. Let the ball support your head without leaning heavily into it.
  3. Start neutral: Keep your chin level, eyes facing forward, and neck long. Do not force your head backward or shrug your shoulders.
  4. Flex the neck slowly: Gently draw your chin toward your upper chest, allowing the head to roll slightly down the ball. Use a small, pain-free range and keep the rest of your body still.
  5. Return with control: Slowly bring your head back to neutral against the ball. Complete repetitions smoothly, stopping if you feel pain, dizziness, numbness, or unusual discomfort.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the range small: Neck training should be slow and comfortable; do not force your chin to your chest.
  2. Do not use momentum: Keep your torso still and avoid bouncing or rolling rapidly on the ball.
  3. Use light pressure: The ball is for support and gentle resistance, not for pressing the head forcefully into the wall.
  4. Breathe normally: Exhale gently as you flex the neck and avoid holding your breath.
