Dumbbell Shrug Stability Ball

The dumbbell shrug on a stability ball is a seated shoulder-elevation exercise that emphasizes the upper trapezius while requiring controlled posture on the ball. It also challenges shoulder-girdle control and trunk stability. It can support upper-back and shoulder strength with light to moderate dumbbells.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up safely: Place a stability ball on a non-slip surface and sit tall near its center with both feet flat and about hip-width apart.
  2. Hold the dumbbells: Let one dumbbell hang at each side with palms facing your body, arms straight but not locked, and your chest lifted.
  3. Brace your position: Tighten your abdominal muscles lightly, keep your head neutral, and avoid rolling the ball as you move.
  4. Shrug upward: Exhale and lift both shoulders straight toward your ears without bending the elbows or rolling the shoulders forward.
  5. Lower with control: Pause briefly at the top, then inhale and slowly lower the shoulders to the starting position. Keep every repetition smooth and balanced.

Technique tips

  1. Use a manageable load: Choose dumbbells light enough to keep the ball stable and your torso upright.
  2. Move vertically: Think of lifting the shoulders straight up and down; do not circle them.
  3. Keep the neck relaxed: Avoid jutting the chin forward or forcing the head toward the shoulders.
  4. Control the descent: Lower slowly rather than dropping the shoulders or allowing the dumbbells to pull you off balance.
