Steady-State Cycling

Steady-state cycling is continuous cycling performed at a consistent, sustainable pace. It primarily develops cardiovascular endurance while using the lower-body muscles, especially the quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, and calves. It supports aerobic fitness, basic endurance, and recovery-focused conditioning.

Instructions

  1. Set up the bicycle so you can reach the pedals comfortably with a slight bend in each knee at the bottom of the pedal stroke.
  2. Begin easily and pedal for several minutes to warm up, keeping your shoulders relaxed and your hands light on the handlebars.
  3. Choose a sustainable pace and resistance that you can maintain continuously while breathing in a controlled manner.
  4. Maintain smooth pedaling with your knees tracking in line with your feet, torso stable, and gaze directed ahead.
  5. Cool down gradually by reducing pace and resistance for several minutes before stopping.

Technique tips

  1. Keep intensity steady: avoid repeated sprints or large resistance changes during the main portion.
  2. Use controlled breathing: you should be able to maintain a comfortable, repeatable rhythm.
  3. Avoid excessive tension: relax your jaw, shoulders, and grip to reduce unnecessary fatigue.
