Swimming

Swimming is a full-body water-based cardio activity performed by moving through the water using coordinated arm, leg, and breathing actions. It primarily develops cardiovascular endurance while engaging the shoulders, back, chest, core, and legs. It supports aerobic fitness, general conditioning, and swimming technique.

Instructions

  1. Choose a supervised, suitable pool area and enter the water only when it is safe to do so; use a lane appropriate for your ability.
  2. Warm up gradually with easy swimming and relaxed breathing before increasing your pace.
  3. Keep your body long and streamlined, with your head in a neutral position and your hips close to the surface.
  4. Use coordinated strokes: pull and recover the arms smoothly, kick from the hips with relaxed ankles, and exhale steadily into the water.
  5. Breathe rhythmically without holding your breath, turning or lifting the head only as needed for your chosen stroke.
  6. Finish with an easy cooldown and leave the water if you feel unusually short of breath, dizzy, or unable to maintain controlled technique.

Technique tips

  1. Prioritize efficient technique over speed; a relaxed, streamlined position reduces unnecessary effort.
  2. Keep the effort manageable and build distance or time gradually, especially when returning after a break.
  3. Follow pool rules and lane etiquette, and avoid swimming alone in unsupervised water.
