Straddle Stretch

The seated straddle stretch is a flexibility exercise performed while sitting with the legs spread comfortably apart and leaning forward from the hips. It primarily lengthens the inner thighs, hamstrings, and hips, while requiring gentle lower-back control. It supports hip mobility, flexibility, and comfortable movement in wide-leg positions.

Instructions

  1. Set up: Sit on the floor with both legs straight and spread them to a comfortable straddle; keep your knees and toes pointing upward.
  2. Find a tall position: Sit evenly on your sit bones, lengthen your spine, and place your hands on the floor in front of you.
  3. Hinge forward: Exhale and slowly walk your hands forward, tipping from the hips rather than rounding aggressively through the lower back.
  4. Hold gently: Stop at a mild to moderate stretch through the inner thighs and backs of the thighs. Keep the shoulders relaxed and breathe steadily.
  5. Return with control: Walk your hands back and rise slowly to upright. Do not force the range or push through sharp pain.

Technique tips

  1. Prioritize position over width: A smaller straddle with a long spine is more useful than forcing the legs wider.
  2. Move from the hips: Think of bringing the lower abdomen forward rather than pulling the head toward the floor.
  3. Keep tension moderate: Breathe slowly and ease out slightly if the stretch becomes sharp, pinching, or causes numbness.
  4. Use support if needed: Sit on a folded towel or firm cushion if the pelvis rolls backward and you cannot sit tall.
