Side Lunge Stretch

The side lunge stretch is a bodyweight movement that opens the inner thighs and hips by shifting into a lateral lunge position. It primarily targets the upper legs, especially the adductors, while the glutes and core help control the position. It can support lower-body mobility, flexibility, and comfortable side-to-side movement.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Start tall with your feet wider than hip width, toes facing mostly forward, and your chest lifted.
  2. Shift your hips back and to one side, bending that knee while keeping the opposite leg straight and its foot flat.
  3. Keep the bent knee tracking in the same direction as its toes, maintain a long spine, and lower only as far as you can control comfortably.
  4. Pause and breathe while feeling a gentle stretch through the inner thigh of the straight leg; do not force the range.
  5. Press through the bent-leg foot to return to the starting position, then repeat on the other side.

Technique tips

  1. Keep your heel down on the bent-leg side to maintain a stable base and better control.
  2. Do not let the bent knee collapse inward; guide it over the middle toes.
  3. Use a smaller range if you feel pinching or sharp discomfort in the hips, knees, or groin.
  4. Move slowly and exhale during the pause rather than bouncing into the stretch.
