Ballet Stretches

Ballet stretches are controlled flexibility exercises based on positions commonly used in ballet. They primarily develop hip, hamstring, quadriceps, calf, and inner-thigh mobility while encouraging upright posture and body control. They can support flexibility, range of motion, and preparation for dance or general movement training.

Instructions

  1. Warm up first with a few minutes of easy whole-body movement until you feel warm; do not begin deep stretching with cold muscles.
  2. Stand tall with feet comfortably turned out only as far as your hips allow, keeping your knees aligned with your toes and your pelvis neutral.
  3. Use a slow, controlled plié to gently mobilize the hips and ankles, then straighten without locking the knees.
  4. For a hamstring stretch, place one heel lightly in front with the leg long, hinge forward from the hips with a long spine, and keep the supporting knee soft.
  5. For a quadriceps and hip stretch, hold a stable support if needed, bend one knee behind you, and gently bring the heel toward the seat while keeping both knees close together.
  6. Hold each comfortable position while breathing steadily, then return slowly and repeat on the other side. Stop if you feel sharp pain, pinching, or joint discomfort.

Technique tips

  1. Work within your current range. Turnout should come from the hips; never force the feet farther out by twisting the knees or ankles.
  2. Use calm breathing. Exhale gently as you settle into a stretch, and do not bounce or force the position.
  3. Keep the spine long and ribs relaxed rather than rounding aggressively or arching the lower back.
  4. Use a wall, chair, or barre-like stable support for balance when needed; control is more important than height or depth.
