Hip Flexor Stretch

The hip flexor stretch is a static mobility exercise typically performed from a half-kneeling position. It lengthens the muscles at the front of the hip and upper thigh, especially the hip flexors, while encouraging controlled pelvic positioning. It can support hip mobility and comfort during activities such as walking, running, squatting, and prolonged sitting.

Instructions

  1. Begin in a half-kneeling position with one knee on the floor and the other foot flat in front, with the front knee roughly above the ankle.
  2. Brace your abdomen and gently tuck your pelvis by bringing the front of the pelvis slightly upward; keep your torso tall.
  3. Shift your body forward slowly until you feel a mild stretch at the front of the hip of the kneeling leg.
  4. Keep the front foot planted, the spine neutral, and the hips facing forward rather than turning to either side.
  5. Hold the position while breathing slowly and evenly, without bouncing or forcing a deeper range.
  6. Return gently to the start, then repeat on the other side.

Technique tips

  1. Aim for gentle tension, not pain. Reduce the forward shift if you feel pinching in the front of the hip or discomfort in the knee.
  2. Do not arch the lower back to create range; keep the ribs stacked over the pelvis.
  3. Use a cushion under the kneeling knee if floor pressure is uncomfortable.
