Thread The Needle Stretch

Thread the Needle Stretch is a floor-based mobility stretch performed from all fours, rotating one arm underneath the body. It primarily mobilizes the shoulders and upper back while gently stretching the rear shoulder and surrounding upper-body tissues. It can support thoracic mobility, posture-focused training, and recovery work.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Start on all fours with your hands under your shoulders and knees under your hips. Keep your spine long and neutral.
  2. Reach one arm forward and across, then slide it underneath your chest toward the opposite side, turning the palm upward.
  3. Lower gently until the shoulder and side of the head rest comfortably on the floor. Keep the supporting hand planted.
  4. Hold and breathe slowly, allowing a comfortable rotation through your upper back without forcing the shoulder toward the floor.
  5. Return with control to all fours, then repeat on the other side. Stop if you feel sharp pain, numbness, or pinching.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the movement gentle. Seek a mild stretch and comfortable rotation rather than trying to force the shoulder to the floor.
  2. Keep your hips mostly stacked over your knees. Excessively shifting the hips back can reduce the intended upper-back rotation.
  3. Breathe steadily. Use slow exhales to relax into the position; do not hold your breath.
  4. Adjust the range as needed. Place a cushion under your head or shoulder if reaching the floor is uncomfortable.
