Shoulder Circles

Shoulder circles are a gentle mobility exercise in which the shoulders move in controlled circles forward and backward. They warm up the shoulder joints and activate the deltoids, trapezius, and upper-back muscles. This movement supports shoulder mobility, posture awareness, and preparation for upper-body training.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Stand tall with your feet about hip-width apart, arms relaxed by your sides, and your head aligned over your torso.
  2. Lift both shoulders gently toward your ears without tensing your neck.
  3. Circle backward by drawing the shoulders back, then down, making smooth, comfortable circles. Keep your arms relaxed.
  4. Repeat for several controlled repetitions, then reverse the direction and circle forward.
  5. Breathe steadily and use a pain-free range of motion; stop if you feel sharp pain or pinching in the shoulder.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the neck relaxed: let the shoulders move without lifting or jutting the head forward.
  2. Use slow circles: controlled movement is more useful than making the largest possible circles.
  3. Move both directions: include forward and backward circles for balanced shoulder mobility.
  4. Avoid forcing the range: reduce the circle size if you feel discomfort, catching, or pain.
