Shoulder Rotation

Shoulder rotations are a gentle mobility exercise in which the shoulders move through controlled circular ranges of motion. They primarily mobilize the shoulder complex and activate the deltoids, upper back, and rotator-cuff muscles lightly. They can be used in a warm-up to prepare the upper body for training or to break up long periods of sitting.

Instructions

  1. Stand tall with your feet about hip-width apart, arms relaxed by your sides, and your neck long.
  2. Gently draw both shoulders up toward your ears.
  3. Move the shoulders back, then down and forward to create slow, smooth circles.
  4. Complete the desired number of circles without moving the torso or shrugging forcefully.
  5. Reverse the direction and repeat with the same controlled range. Stop if the movement causes sharp pain or pinching.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the motion slow: use a comfortable, pain-free circle rather than forcing a large range.
  2. Keep your ribs stacked over your hips: do not compensate by arching or twisting the lower back.
  3. Breathe normally and keep the jaw and neck relaxed throughout the movement.
