Barbell Side Bend

The barbell side bend is a standing weighted trunk exercise performed with a barbell supported across the upper back. It primarily trains the obliques through controlled lateral flexion, with the lower back assisting to stabilize the torso. It can support core strength and trunk control when performed with a light, manageable load.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up safely: Place a light barbell across your upper back as for a high-bar squat, not on your neck. Stand tall with feet about hip-width apart.
  2. Brace: Grip the bar securely, keep your chest lifted, and gently tighten your abdominal muscles while maintaining a neutral head and neck.
  3. Bend to one side: Keeping your hips and shoulders facing forward, slowly slide your rib cage sideways toward one hip. Keep both feet flat and do not rotate your torso.
  4. Return under control: Use your obliques to bring your torso back to upright without leaning backward or forward.
  5. Repeat evenly: Complete the planned repetitions on one side, then perform the same number on the other. Use a light load and stop if you feel sharp discomfort.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the load light: A long barbell creates substantial leverage, so prioritize precise control over added weight.
  2. Avoid rotation: Keep both shoulders level relative to the bar and face forward; twisting changes the movement.
  3. Move slowly: Use a comfortable range of motion and avoid bouncing at the bottom of the bend.
  4. Breathe steadily: Brace gently before moving, exhale as you return upright, and do not hold your breath for long.
